Blogtober 2024 : Day 31

It’s Hallowe’en today … we’ve never been big into the trick or treating at our house, although both big and not so small daughter have grown up with friends who live on streets where Hallowe’en is a HUGE thing and they have both benefitted from the generosity of their friends’ neighbours – although I am not sure the dentist would agree it was such a good thing! 🙂

I thought this was the first year that the girls haven’t been here to carve a pumpkin, but looking back, that was last year and this is how our pumpkin looked when not so small daughter went to watch a scary movie and big daughter was busy …

Pfft!  I can’t remember if not so small daughter did carve it when she got home or not, but I don’t have any photos so the chances are that she didn’t.

The year before, though, was better.

Two pumpkins with faces carved into them and lit up with candles. They are sitting on a windowsill and there are silhouettes of trees in the darkness behind them.

This was the last year that the girls carved pumpkins and their conversation about it was the subject of that month’s Monthly Musing.  They did say that they weren’t giving up on pumpkin carving, but perhaps they’ll just take a break for a few years, like I have done 🙂

This afternoon, I looked at the little pumpkin that came in the veg box this week, I wasn’t sure whether I was going to bother doing anything with it or not.

It’s so little … and there’s just me here … and then I thought, “Well, why not?!”  It’s been years since I have carved out a pumpkin as the girls have been big enough to do it for themselves, and it would only go to waste otherwise as we don’t have pumpkin on our menu.

I got this far …

and then I stopped.  I have only ever carved the traditional triangle eyes and serrated mouth on pumpkins, but I know that if you search for pumpkin carving on the internet, it’s a whole rabbit hole of beautiful designs that are not necessarily scary at all.  My friend Lucy always carves a beautiful pumpkin for herself and whilst I didn’t have the time to launch into anything too fancy, I thought I might do something different this year.

And here it is!

Oh, it doesn’t look so great on the kitchen worktop when it wasn’t quite dark, but I LOVE it now that it is!

I have no idea why it is pink, I think the camera had some kind of meltdown over the exposure – but look at the shadows!  It looks like a some kind of superhero cat with flashes of lighting and it has made me very happy 🙂

Hallowe’en also marks the end of October and that means the end of Blogtober too.  I have loved having you keep me company this month, thank you!  I lost the plot with your comments and emails a bit but I do read them all even if I don’t reply straight away, and I’ll do my best to go back and answer them all.

In previous years, I’ve written a round-up post at the beginning of November – I may not do that tomorrow but I will try to do that over the weekend whilst October is still fresh in my mind, and then we’re on the run up to the end of the year.  That’s quite a thought, isn’t it?!  There’s really no excuse for me not to be super-organised for all that this year (after all, the date of Christmas is not a surprise!) but we’ll see how it goes.  I may be too busy wearing my new coat to be as organised as I should be! 🙂

Thank you again for being here with me, it’s so lovely to know that I’ve got you to chat to, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my ramblings this month! xx
