KnitPro Knit & Sip set review
Back in 2020, I was delighted to be asked if I would like to review a new set of KnitPro needles called the Knit & Sip set – a gorgeous box of wooden interchangeable needles – and I said that I would! The needles were a gift from KnitPro (thank you very much!) but the review is all my own opinion. This is an updated version of the review (including some new photos), and I’ve linked the original blog post at the bottom of the page in case you’d like to read it.
Introducing … the Knit & Sip interchangeable set!
I’ve used a set of KnitPro Nova interchangables for years so I was very pleased to have an updated set of needles, and I was also interested to try out a wooden set as my needles are all mostly metal tips.
It’s a big box – you can see that it’s about the width of our coffee table – and it feels very luxurious to have a Big Box full of knitting needles! I got the box around Christmas-time and it did feel very much like an extra gift – I felt very spoilt!
Taking off the cardboard lid, the needle box inside has a velvet embossed lid, the “steam” of the coffee cup giving us a glimpse of the needles underneath – and you can see the espresso cups to the right – that’s the “sip” part of the set!
The tips come in sizes from 3.5mm to 8.00mm which is a good range for pretty much everything you’d want to knit (except socks, perhaps, but KnitPro have those covered in other sets 🙂 ).
Each of the tips has been made from a different type of wood, and they are each named after a different type of coffee. It’s not always easy to get the camera to focus on shiny words on one needle tip when there are so many for it to try to include in one photo, but here’s a good photo of one of them being used to knit a Split Mitten …
Fortunately (because I am never going to remember which coffee name corresponds which size), each needle tip has the size on the metal connection: Cortado (3.5m); Latte (4.0mm); Cappucino (4.5mm); Macchiato (5.0mm); Irish Coffee (5.5mm); Espresso (6.0mm); Americano (7.0mm); Ristretto (8.0mm)
(2025 update – the names do rub off with use, sadly, so it’s a good job the sizes are on the tips too!)
The connecting ends are gold-coloured metal and make a neat join with the needle tip and also with the cable. I’ve always recommended KnitPro as a good needle for sock knitting beginners because the joins are smooth and don’t catch the finer 4ply yarns – but nobody wants their yarn snagging on their needles, no matter what weight it is, and these needles are as good as any I use for my socks.
I must admit that I was a bit worried that they would be too light in my hands compared to the metal ones that I have but actually, they’re a decent weight and I’ve been fine knitting with them. I like that the sizes are stamped onto the tips too; I have to use a needle gauge with my Nova tips when I forget which size I’ve used, but these all sit snugly inside the box in their own little slot so I know exactly where they are!
The tray of needle tips lifts off and underneath, in a secret compartment (well, maybe not so secret but I enjoyed writing that) are a coffee bean-shaped zipped pouch, a selection of cables of different lengths (4 cables – 60cm, 2 x 80cm and 100cm), cable stops and tightening keys which are handy things not only for tightening up your interchangeable needles, but also for getting SIM cards out of phones when you can’t find the “official” key from the phone (ask me how I know that) 🙂
Finally in the set are two tiny espresso cups. They’re part-glazed pottery and very cute – although completely wasted on me, sadly, as I don’t drink coffee!
I wonder if I should suggest a tea-themed set to KnitPro for the future …? Whatever your drink preferences, this set of needles is lovely and the coffee theme hasn’t put me off at all – and if you’re someone who likes coffee then this set will be right up your street! It’s neatly done and the whole set feels very luxurious and a proper treat – I felt very spoilt to be gifted it … even though it feels rather rebellious to have my mug of tea next to me whilst I’m using the needles! 🙂
There are details of all the needles and sets available on the KnitPro website if you want to take a look. 2025 update – Knit & Sip doesn’t feature on the website any more but is still available from stockists.
